Becoming a Member

The Columbia Population Research Center is funded by the Population Dynamics Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to advance population-based research at Columbia. Therefore, our membership primarily consists of scholars who are active population researchers. However, we also realize the value of interdisciplinary research, and so our membership also includes those whose work is related to our primary research areas, but is primarily clinical or historical.

Columbia scholars interested in joining CPRC should review the expectations for members below. Prospective members should be nominated by an existing CPRC affiliate, who is familiar with their research program, via email to [email protected]. Nominees are approved for membership by a recommendation of the co-directors and a majority vote of the CPRC Steering Committee.

Member Expectations

  • Actively engage in population research (with “active” meaning publishing in journals, including those relevant to population researchers, participating in scientific conferences such as PAA, and applying for external funding to do population research)

  • Contribute to CPRC’s intellectual community by attending our seminars, presenting research at our mini-conferences, sharing expertise and networking with junior faculty, or participating in working groups.

  • Respond to requests for information to advance center goals, e.g. contributing to CPRC’s renewal application, and submitting accomplishments (such as grant awards, recent publications, media mentions) for dissemination through CPRC’s website, social media, or newsletter.

  • Deposit all population-related peer-reviewed research articles that benefit from CPRC support in the PubMedCentral database. CPRC support includes seed grants, computing and methodology support (e.g. technical & secure data support from CPRC computing staff, access to High Performance Computing and Secure Data Enclave), the intellectual community provided by events, and mentoring. Publications stemming from research supported by CPRC, either through a seed grant or through infrastructural support, should acknowledge that support.

  • Actively engage in research related to CPRC's primary research areas, which are children, youth, and families; climate and environment; immigration/migration; reproductive health and HIV/AIDS; and urbanism and neighborhoods; or the cross-cutting theme of inequalities and policies to mitigate those inequalities.
