Veronica Barcelona

Veronica Barcelona, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Columbia University School of Nursing, a public health nurse, and a reproductive epidemiologist. Her program of research centers on understanding mechanisms and risk factors underlying adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, with the goal of achieving healthy and safe birth outcomes for all. Barcelona aims to understand adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth through the study of epigenomics, structural stigma and bias, and stressors such as racism and discrimination. Barcelona studies electronic health records to examine the use of stigmatizing language and how it affects maternal morbidity outcomes. Through the utilization of multi-omic methods, she hopes to reduce inequities in pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes for women and families of color.
